D’Santy Huaraches Powerfully Impacts DACA Recipients With Their Product

With the goal to help you connect with your roots, D’Santy Huaraches has created a powerful way for DACA recipients to connect with their homeland, even when many cannot visit those areas due to travel restrictions. By creating a handmade sandal from Mexico, D’Santy is bringing a piece of home to those who wear it, specifically DACA recipients, becoming an impactful brand for many. Created by Maria and Rolando Haro, the brother and sister duo have turned a difficult situation to one of empowerment and created a business out of it.

“When we immigrated to the United States from Mexico, we would wear the sandals that our family would make by hand to school, and we would get made fun of for wearing them and the way we spoke English,” says Rolando from D’Santy.

“Now after 55 years in business, we have changed the narrative to be one of empowerment in your roots and encouraging many other people like us to proudly wear them,” says Maria. “For DACA recipients this is powerful because we know how hard it can be to not be able to visit your homeland. Through the huaraches we bring from Mexico, we can help DACA recipients, like our younger sister, connect with their roots. That’s the goal and we’ve been able to make this happen thanks to the support of many people including Kevin Raiford from NV Grow, who has helped us grow so much.”

NV Grow, a partner of Blackstone Launchpad, has provided D’Santy Huaraches funding through their NVenture Fund and also provided direct services like a marketing consultant and social media strategist, which has increased their sales and exposure, allowing them to see their vision and their grandpa’s vision come to life.

“We helped provide them with funding to help expand their product line and we know that because of their heritage and work ethic they are going to be a continued success,” says Kevin Raiford, Director of NV Grow.

What started as Maria and Rolando’s grandparents making shoes by hand in the huarache capital of the world: Michoacan, Mexico, then transitioned to their dad selling the huaraches at the swap meets in Las Vegas and now, they have become an international success via online sales. “We want to show people that it’s possible and that there is help out there,” says Rolando. Now, D’Santy Huaraches is the leading huarache retailer in all of North America, becoming a leader in the industry and to the overall community, showing you the power of connecting with your roots.

28 Student Teams Selected as Annual Pitch Competition Semi-Finalists

From over 130 nominations, 28 student teams from 24 schools have been selected as semi-finalists in the 2022 Blackstone LaunchPad Pitch Competition. They will compete to be one of five finalists pitching for a chance to win a total of over $50,000 in prize money and in-kind prizes.

Nominated by Campus Directors from across the network, these students represent the top candidates based on four criteria: Innovation, Business Model and Viability, Team, and Pitch Quality.

Over the next several weeks, the semi-finalists teams will pitch live to Blackstone LaunchPad judges, who will select the finalists. After receiving ongoing mentoring support from Blackstone Ambassadors, the finalists will pitch live on April 12, on the main stage of the Startup Grind Global Conference in Silicon Valley. The competition will also include a virtual People’s Choice Award, with online voting starting soon, so stay tuned!

With nearly half of the students led by a woman founder and nearly three-quarters led by a student who identifies as BIPOC, the cohort of semifinalists is one of the most diverse groups to participate in a LaunchPad signature program. They demonstrate diversity of industry focus as well, with companies running the gamut from Zuk Fitness, which provides specialized workouts tailored to wheelchair users, to Culturally Kreative, a publishing company aiming to diversify the children’s book industry. More than five of the student founders previously participated in the Blackstone LaunchPad Fellowship, a program geared towards helping earlier stage founders.

Last year’s first place winner was Marla Beyer, founder of pediatric mental-healthcare platform Hopscotch. Read about the other 2021 winners here.

Black History Month: Organization helps African-American business owners overcome odds

by JACLYN SCHULTZ, UPDATED FEB 18, 2022 | POSTED ON FEB 17, 2022

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — This Black History Month, a Las Vegas nonprofit is shedding light on the importance of minority-owned businesses, and the call to help more entrepreneurs overcome barriers to achieve the American Dream and financial independence.

According to the United States Census, 18% of small businesses were owned by minorities.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce describes small businesses as crucial to economic growth and financial stability of communities.

Nevada Grow has helped numerous entrepreneurs with launching small business, everything from education, securing loans and getting a business license.

“Being a business, especially a Black business, people may not have had uncles or aunts or sisters or brothers who are on Wall Street or in Silicon Valley, to guide them through the venture capital process. all they need is a little bit of a help,” said Professor Kevin Raiford of the College of Southern Nevada. “There have been a lot of historical issues that have made it hard for Black people to access capital, but we’re trying to break down those barriers,” he said.

Nulife Kicks launched in Las Vegas, restoring sneakers to their original form.

“The hobby or the side hustle quickly grew into a business,” said Akeem Anifowoshe. He studied chemistry and biology at Southern Utah University, helping him engineer his own sneaker care product. “Nevada Grow was our first access to capital here. Just having that experience that really helped our business exponentially,” he said.

Las Vegas Latino-owned business, Filoso Barber Brand, makes history with razor brand for barbers

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — With 10 years of experience as a barber, Chicano and Vegas native Francisco Carbajal had to stop cutting hair at the beginning of the pandemic because of social distancing.

“It definitely fueled me. I realized that I could do something with this,” said Carbajal, the owner of Filoso Barber Brand.

Carbajal looked for alternative ways to keep working. The solution? Posting video tutorials and tips on YouTube for other people in the industry.

“The response was amazing not only from the Latino community but from the barber industry period,” Carbajal said.

Through posting, Carbajal realized there was a shortage of barber tools and products, specifically, within the Latino community.

He teamed up with an entrepreneur from Mexico and together they created the Filoso Barber Brand.

“Most of us are first-generation Americans, so we don’t really have a foundation. It was hard getting started,” Carbajal said.

Las Vegas saw its Hispanic population grow by 23% over the past decade.

That also meant growth in Latino-owned businesses, despite long-standing racial barriers that limit their access to startup money.

“There’s just not enough access to capital for small businesses, especially minority-owned small businesses. We do know that two out of every four businesses that have opened in Las Vegas over the past five years have been Hispanic businesses,” said Peter Guzman, president & CEO of the Latin Chamber of Commerce of Nevada.

Guzman explains that Latino small-business owners, like Carbajal, are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S., they’re also far less likely to get a bank loan compared to white business owners.

“Razor giants like Gillette, they buy out everybody. So, one of the struggles that we had was not having enough resources,” Carbajal said.

Carbajal and his business partner turned to local minority business support group Nevada Grow.

With the help and added resources from NV Grow and NVenture Fund, Filoso Barber Brand has now become the first Latino-owned business to create a barber blade in the country, putting Latinos at the top of the barber industry.

NV Grow is a State of Nevada small business initiative customized for Southern Nevada existing businesses that have over $50,000 and less than $700,000 in sales.

“We are really able to help people, like Frank, and set them up to succeed,” said Kevin Raiford with NV Grow.

Participating businesses receive access to economic and demographic data and assistance from Nevada Small Business Development Center counselors to help grow their businesses.

“Making that leap is initially the best thing you can do when you first start,” Carbajal said.
